Welcome to the first part of the Summer Bag CAL. It’s finally time to start crocheting our summer bag. We will start with the bottom of the bag and crochet our way up, round after round 🙂

Abbreviations (US Terms)

st/sts – Stitch/stitches
ch – Chain
sl st – Slip stitch
sc – Single crochet
hdc – Half double crochet
dc – Double crochet

Symbols

** – Repeat instructions between asterisks the amount of times specified.

General

• The first ch on each round does not count as a stitch.
• Join the round with a sl st in the first st of the round if nothing else is described.
• Crochet through both loops of a stitch if nothing else is described.
• The stitch count for each round is written in the parenthesis to the right below each round description.

Foundation chain

Let’s start with color A!

Chain 120. Join the chain to a ring by making a sl st in the first ch made.

Tip: Control that the chain is not twisted before you join it to a ring.

Round 1:

Ch 1, make 1 hdc in each st around.

( 120 sts : 120 hdc )

Tip: It is ok to only crochet through one loop of the foundation chain if that feels easier. It does not matter since the bottom hole will be stitched together in the end. 

Round 2:

Ch 1, *1 dc in next st, 1 sl st in next st *, repeat until end of round.

( 120 sts : 60 dc and 60 sl st)

Round 3:

Ch 1, make 1 hdc in each st around.

( 120 sts : 120 hdc)

Round 4 – 11:

Repeat round 2 and 3, four times!

After round 11: ( 120 sts : 120 hdc)

By now you have probably noticed that there is a lovely texture on the wrong side of your work, the inside. Therefor we are going to turn are work inside out to make the lovely texture end up on the outside.

Round 12:

Ch 3  (counts as 1 dc), make 1 dc in the same st.

*1 dc each in next 5 sts, 1 hdc each in next 4 sts, 1 sc in next st, 1 hdc each in next 4 sts, 1 dc each in next 5 sts, 3 dc in next st * Repeat  6 times, skip the last 3 dc on the last repeat and make instead 1 dc in the same st as de 2 first dc on the round.

Join the round by making a sl st in the top ch of the beginning ch-3 or with an invisible join.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

(132 sts : 78 dc, 48 hdc and 6 sc)
